McCain and Palin – Intellect Or Inadequate?
Friday, Senator John McCain made a shocking choice for his VP slot, by picking little known Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin, as his own words are thrown back at him for criticizing Dem. presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, as too inexperienced to become commander in chief. The startling choice will make history. No matter which candidate makes it to the White House, on Nov. 4, Americans will either have the nation’s first black president, or first woman as a republican vice president.
Gov. Palin, 44, is still in her first term as governor, opposes abortion and gay marriage, is for increased domestic drilling for oil, is a member of the National Rifle Association, and has a son in the U.S. army. But critics question her lack of foreign policy experience.
“I’ve spent the last few months looking for a running mate who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people that are counting on us,” Mr. McCain said, to a crowd of nearly 15,000 supporters, waving glow sticks; red, white, and blue.
“When you get to know her, you’re going to be as impressed as I am,” he said. “She’s got the grit, integrity, good sense and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today.”
For her part in the rally, Mrs. Palin was flanked by her husband, and four of her five children. Standing at the podium very composed, she delivered a speech on teleprompters, with a fired up voice.
“Some of life’s greatest opportunities come unexpectedly, and this is definitely the case today,” she said with a smile. “This is a moment when principles and political independence matter a lot more than just the party lines. This is a moment when great causes can be won and great threats overcome.”
The announcement displayed one of the more exciting events of the McCain campaign to date, with the crowd clearly ecstatic by the history-making pick. Supporters serenaded Sen. John McCain not once, but three times with the tune of “Happy Birthday” for his 72nd birthday.
